Energy North East Steering Group
Influencing to ensure that North East Energy priorities are delivered
The Energy North East Steering Group is an effective link between the diverse base of organisations in the North East’s energy sector and local, regional, national and european government.
The group will provide expert and considered advice as well as resources to deliver the identified Regional Energy Priorities. Whilst Energy North East does not have its own specific budget or resources it can through its membership and representation ensure that the Region’s energy related activities and resources are focussed to:
- achieve a significant positive contribution to the region’s economy by reducing costs to consumers and securing business opportunity;
- promote cleaner energy solutions, reducing carbon emissions and the impacts of climate change;
- improve the security of energy supply to the region’s economy and population and enhance the region’s role in providing for national need and
- achieve widespread affordable warmth.
Through its vast network of organisations and partnerships, Energy North East is in a unique position of being able to influence both strategic and delivery bodies. The role of the steering group is to act as a peer review for regional projects that are emerging in order to validate the projects fit with the policy framework, and assisting to overcome any issue resulting from the project as well as any short term or long term barriers that the project may face. Such work will inform the regions policy refresh by ensuring that the alignment of regional policy and projects activity. A priority for Energy North East is to build a strong working relationship with the emerging Energy Leadership Council at One North East, performing a role that will help to inform and reassure this organisation.
In addition to the Energy North East lead partners - Government Office for the North East, the North East Assembly and One North East, representatives from key energy sectors – the energy supply chain, affordable warmth and energy efficiency providers, local authorities and energy intensive industries, are important members of the steering group, ensuring that Energy North East is addressing all aspects of the energy related issues facing the region.
