History of energy in the North East
The North East region of England has a long history of pioneering developments in the energy field. It is a traditional coal producing region, with Newcastle being the world's first and greatest coal port, providing the fuel to power the modern industrial revolution. Its inventors led technological developments in energy, for instance Charles Parson, who developed the world's first steam turbine in 1884 used to drive modern power generation plants. It also led the way in renewable developments, with Cragside, home of William George Armstrong, being the first home in the world powered by hydroelectric power.
