Creativity, Cash and a Climate for Change in Europe Seminar

On 1 February 2008, Europe Direct North East (England) and Energy North East held an event: Creativity, Cash and a Climate for Change in Europe: Transnational funding opportunities for energy projects in Durham City, North East England. The event addressed an identified need for the region’s energy and climate change sector to learn about transnational funding opportunities.

It aimed to challenge attendees to think creatively about the funding programmes, and inspire organisations to apply. It provided an opportunity to meet programme leaders, to further develop project ideas, and to network with like-minded individuals and people who could help project development.

Promoted via local networks, the event generated significant interest from the public and private sector, including research establishments. Despite inclement weather on the day, fifty five people from a range of backgrounds attended to hear:

·        Fiona Hall MEP’s update on the latest EU energy policy;
·        the North East England Office in Brussels outline their role; and
·        representatives from the UK agencies of Intelligent Energy Europe, the energy element of the Framework Programme 7, and Interreg IVB North Sea Programme provide an overview of funding opportunities.

In addition, a selection of local energy projects provided practical examples and shared their experiences and lessons learned - attendees seemed to particularly appreciate this. Andrew Robinson from the European Commercial and Consular Office, a respected regional figure, proved to be an excellent Chair.

Event feedback was extremely positive, for example

“fantastic event, gave great insight, understanding and inspiration”

“good mix of overview/ background, content/ framework, practical examples/ information for next steps”

In the longer term, it is intended that the event will result in North East England being involved in new transnational energy projects. The event organisers will monitor and support progress towards this.
