Technology development, incubation and testing

Purpose-built incubation facilities for start-up companies are located in a number of specialist clusters across North East England and this incubation and development space provides a distinct offering for the region.

NaREC’s incubation facilities include highbay manufacturing/assembly space, with a 30 tonne crane.  This is currently serving Applied Superconductors Ltd (ASL) as they assemble prototype fault current-limiters to be field-trialled by United Utilities, Scottish Power and CE Electric.

NaREC also provides turn-key facilities management solutions for relocating energy companies and recently encouraged Seadrill Engineering to move to the region to a fully equipped office space delivered to their exact specification and IT requirements, in a process fully managed by NaREC.

CPI is the leading innovation centre for the process industry in the UK, and is located at the Wilton Centre, which provides best in class industrial incubation space for new energy process businesses.

Newcastle Science City has identified energy as a key component of its plans and its partners will invest £200m over 10 years in Research Development and Demonstration for the energy and environment theme.

In addition, a major new science park is also under development in the region at NETPark, County Durham.  Several new facilities are planned as part of a £200m investment in Energy Research Development and Demonstration over the next 10 years and these include Science Central, the GREAT Institute (Geothermal Research Education and Training Institute), and CREEL (Centre for Renewable Energy from Land).
